Samuel Burham Shackford (1817-1881) - son of Samuel Shackford and Nancy Buzzell (the one we're writing about today)
Samuel Burham Shackford (1871-1934) - grandson of above - the son of Charles B Shackford and Caroline Cartland (we've shared his photograph in an earlier blog) and
Samuel Burnham Shackford (1888-1949) - grand nephew of the eldest S. B. Shackford - son of William H Shackford and Callie E. McLelland
We ought not to close our report for the year ending with the
close of winter and the opening of spring, without at least a
reference to a sad harvest which the stern Reaper has made in
the past and present members of our Board. Barton G. Towne,
of Lancaster, and active member, and Samuel B. Shackford, of
Conway, a past member, were both gathered to their rest dur-
ing the winter now closing. They were good men and true, and
left a record that will do honor to their memories.
Mr. Shackford was a life resident of Conway, where he held
many public trusts, and was most highly esteemed. He was a
farmer until his later years, when he relinquished his occupation
and became the treasurer of the Conway Savings Bank. His
death was caused by a cancer on the hand. His age was sixty-
three years. It is a singular fact that he and his only son,
Charles B. Shackford, of Dover, died at very nearly the same
hour. Mr. Shackford was appointed to the Board, in the fall of
1876, and would have been reappointed in 1879, had he not
expressed a desire to retire.
Note: Charles B Shackford was not Samuel's only son, he was his oldest living son. Samuel's oldest son, Onslow James Shackford died at the age of 18 of lung fever. Many newspapers noted the proximity of timing of the death of father and son and continued the incorrect statement that Charles B was Samuel's only son.
