Martha's husband, Henry Clay Howard, was born on November 22, 1836 in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts to Amasa and Sarah (Clay) Howard. We're not sure what brought him to New Market, New Hampshire but on August 30, 1862, he enlisted in the Civil War from New Market and served with the 13th Infantry New Hampshire Volunteers in Company E until March 16, 1865. He is mentioned in a diary of this unit in notes about procuring lodging at a farmhouse, being part of a group left on a very cold shore to guard baggage, and proving a success by arriving at a unit to prove dental services. Henry was working as a dentist in 1867 before his marriage.
We believe that Henry and Martha went to Saco, Maine in 1870 and moved sometime thereafter to Hot Springs, Arkansas where they were residing in 1880. We don't know when Martha became ill but she died in Newmarket on August 17, 1886 of kidney disease. Martha and Henry did not have children but Henry returned to Hot Springs and married Emma Cann. They had one daughter Garaphelia Howard most likely named after his sister. Henry died August 2 or Aug 22 in Hot Springs, Arkansas at the age of 81 and is buried in the Hollywood Cemetery in Hot Springs.
