MRS. GEORGIANNA ALLARD OF STOCKTON
Stockton, March 4. - Mrs. Georgianna Allard died yesterday of heart failure. She left a son, Arthur Allard, of Seattle; a brother, George Shackford, a resident of Ripon, and a grandson Charles Allard, of this city.
Georgianna Shackford was born 25 September 1837 in Brighton, Massachusetts[1], daughter of John Shackford and Mary Glover. She was eleven years in 1849 when her father John and his two brothers Samuel Quimby and Luther Calvin left Massachusetts and headed to California[2]. In 1850 she was living in Chester, New Hampshire with her mother Mary, brother Samuel, and brother George.[3] Sometime before 1860 they headed to California to join their father. By June 1860 she was working as a teacher with the family Moss in Casoria, San Joaquin, California.[4] She'd probably been in California for a while because by November of that year she had passed her qualification examination and had obtained a teaching certificate[5].
In November 1861, Georgianna married Abner R Allard[6] who had also made the long journey from Massachusetts to California via Panama in 1857[7]. They had three children: Arthur, Charles, and a daughter. Georgianna lost her son Charles in 1869 when he was only seven and two years later lost her husband on Christmas day. On December 26, 1871, she was called to testify at an inquest regarding his death where she stated that he did not eat on Christmas day, had sent his son Arthur to the store on for 2 bits worth of morphine, that she warned him about taking too much morphine, and that she had called for help when she saw him with blue lips.[8][1]
After her husband's death Georgianna worked as an artist, a painting instructor, and as a decorator for the Stockton Art Pottery Company[9]. She is listed in the 1860 census as a portrait painter[10], was a known flower painter in 1886,[11] and entered her student's paintings in the Stockton fair in 1887[12] and can be found in the 1888 directory listed as a teacher of drawing and painting[13]. By 1906 she was living at 626 E Miner St in Stockton.[14] Georgianna died at the age of 72 on March 3, 1910 of angina pectoris leaving a son Arthur Allard, a brother George Franklin Shackford, and a grandson Charles Allard Shackford[15][16].
Wouldn't it be great if we got to see some of her artwork someday?
