We've already established that John was the first child of William (1783-1870) and Mary Cutter (Lincoln) Shackford. He was born in Eastport, Maine on January 30, 1839 and was a seaman since the age of 16. He was the captain of the Pioneer, the steamship Illinois, and Jay Gould's yacht the Atalanta, worked as the Superintendent of the American Line and represented the United States at the 1889 and 1900 International Marine Conference.
John W Shackford had been ill for many years and wrote his will on May 24, 1905 and added a codicil on June 1, 1905. He died 22 days later on June 23, 1905.
John appointed his brother, Edward Wallace Shackford and sister Mary Cutter Lincoln French as joint executors, however on June 30, 1905, Edward relinquished his role leaving his sister as sole executrix. John's assets totaled $6901.84 and his debts totaled $4215.90 leaving total assets of $2685.94. The probate court documents a tax of $134.29 was paid. John's will states that the estate should be divided between his living siblings which would have been Edward Wallace Shackford, Mary Cutter Lincoln French, Eben Lincoln Shackford, and Sarah Ellen Shackford. His Codicil stated that he should be cremated.
