In 1870, Albert (Burt) is living with his parents John L and Mary J Shackford in Concord where he's listed as age 6. We believe it would be difficult to mix up a 3 yr old from a 6 year old who is at school and can't explain why this document doesn't align with the other census or vital records but adds further to the confusion about Alfred's birth date.
Like many of his siblings who were not yet independent, Albert was working as a servant in 1880. He was living in the home of James Eaton, a farmer in Newbury, New Hampshire working, age 13, working on the farm.
We're not sure what brought Alfred to New York - possibly he moved there to follow his older brother Charles W Shackford but we find this indexed record of his marriage in Manhattan on September 29, 1895 to Jessica Speed, the daughter of George and Jenette (McKenzie) Speed from Scotland. According to the record, he was 28 and she was 19 or 20.
In 1900 Alfred was living in Brooklyn, New York working as an electrician with his wife Jessie and two children Olive, age 4 and Gladys, age 2 and five years later the family is together on 51 Java Street with Albert now listing his profession as "engineer".
By 1907 Alfred is advertising for a job as an engineer with an ad that says he is a second class engineer, works around thermostats, vacuum, and all electric work. He owns his own tools, is an American, sober and steady. Perhaps finding a job was still difficult as in 1910, Albert and his family were living together with his wife's sister Christina Cohen.
On June 1, 1915, Albert and his family were living back on their own on St Ann's Street in the Bronx in with their daughters who were now ages 19 and 16. Both daughters were employed, one as a bookkeeper, the other as a telephone operator. Tragically their mother Jessica died on December 19 of that year. We believe that after Jessie's death, Albert moved to 381 E 140th Street in New York where he worked as a clerk and them find him in the Bronx working as a machinist in 1920 and working odd jobs at 450 136th Street in 1930.
When the census was taken on April 11, 1940, Alfred was living with his daughter Gladys who was working as a printing clerk. He understandably was listed with no occupation as he was 73 years old. Three month's later tragedy struck in the form of an iron pipe that flew off of a truck striking 73 year old Albert in the head leaving him hospitalized with a compound fracture of the skull. We don't know if he recovered from this injury, just that a lawsuit was filed on his behalf and that died nine months later on May 14, 1941. He was buried at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
