When George's father Amaziah felt it important to write a will on on 8 June 1868, he doesn't mention that George is ill but he ensures that he provides for his son George by placing his estate in trust asking his brother John and partner Nathaniel George his administrators "to pay over appropriate the net income and proceeds thereof to the comfortable support and maintenance of my said wife Adaline and my son George W. for and during the term of their natural lives and the life of the survivor of them but if said income should prove insufficient for said comfortable support and maintenance then I authorize same said trustees or the survivor of them to appropriate therefore such part of the principal as they may think best provided"
Only if the income from Amaziah's estate was more than needed to support Adeline and George, was it to be divided between his two younger sons, Otis H Shackford and Charles W Shackford.
George died on 24 January 1869 of necrencephalus and it is from his this death record listing cause of death that we understand why Amaziah felt it important to ensure that George was cared for the term of his natural life. Amaziah died of consumption six months after the death of George, his oldest son. He had already lost his 2nd son Charles W. Shackford who had died in 1849 at the age of 3.
