Otis Henry Shackford, the son of Amaziah Goodwin Shackford, a merchant and Adeline Litchfield served as a private in Company E in the 60th Mass Infantry. The Record of the Massachusetts Volunteers 1861-1861 states that he was age 18 when he mustered in on July 23, 1864 and that a bounty of $85 was paid for his enlistment. However according to Corey's Births Marriages and Deaths in the Town of Malden Massachusetts 1649-1850, Otis was born on August 13, 1847 which would make him only 16 when he enlisted and mustered into the 60th Massachusetts Infantry. He was only 17 when he mustered out on Nov 30, 1864 in Indianapolis after serving for 4 months and 14 days in Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Indianapolis in a unit that was not involved in any battles. (The whole Company appears to have mustered in and out on these dates.)
After serving in the 60th, Otis is found in the 1865 state census living with his parents in Malden. Three years later he married Mary J Eagen in Lowell and by 1870 he was living with his mother, wife and two year old son Charles while working at the Malden Rubber Works Factory. Otis and Mary had two more children Fannie M, and Frederick Otis who they raised in Malden before Mary died of pneumonia in 1893 at the age of 47. Otis remained in Malden working as a bootmaker and a night watchman. Sometime before his death on May 3, 1921 he moved to Somerville where his son Charles lived.
We wonder if Otis' parents knew he was joining the military at age 16.
