Johnson-Shackford [sic, jsp]
[Special to the Times-Dispatch]
LYNCHBURG. VA., February 4-A wedding of much interest occurred this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at the Court Street Methodist Church, when Mr Joseph E. Johnson, [sic, jsp] a prominent business man of Farmville, led to the altar Miss Mary Kingsbury Shackford, daughter of Rev. Joseph W. Shackford, the presiding elder of the Lynchburg district of the Methodist church. The father of the charming young bride officiated at the wedding, being assisted by the Rev. Dr. S. S. Lambeth, of Bedford City. The maid of honor was Miss Ethel Shackford, of Richmond, and Dr. J. Henry Rawlings, of this city, was the best man. The bridesmaids were Miss Sarah Beckley of Morristown, N. J., Miss Sallie Johnson, of Bedford City; Miss Bessie Clark, of Bedford City, and Miss Joe McIlwaine, of Petersburgh. The groomsmen were Messrs. J. Tanner Kinnier, John D. Kinkle and W. S. Bell, of this city, and Mr. John M. Burton, of Charlottesville. After an extended southern tour Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will make their home in Farmville.
Mary Kingsbury Shackford (1880-1962) was the third child of Joseph Wesley Shackford and Cora Kingsbury. Mary's mother had died when she was nine and her father died 18 months after her marriage. Her father kept a wonderful diary during his younger years which was published by Mary Kingsbury's son, Joseph S. Johnston which we'd recommend for any descendants or others interested in this Shackford family history. Also we've previously shared a blog about Mary's sister Isabel.
Joseph Edwards Johnston was (1878-1952) the son of John William Johnston and Lucy Malvona Thomas who were from Bedford, Virginia.
In 1910, we find Joseph and Mary in 1910 in Farmville, Virginia living with her father's brother's wife, Callie Evelyn McLelland Shackford. (Callie's daughter Ethel had been Mary's maid of honor). Joseph is working as a tobacconist. When Joseph registered with the WWI draft in 1918, the family was in living at Park Ave, Richmond Virginia. By 1920 they were living in New York City with two children and he was working as a tobacconist. We lose track of them after 1920 but believe that Joseph died in 1952 followed by Mary in 1962. We believe that they were buried in two different cemeteries which indicates a possible separation.

We'd love to hear from anyone who has more information about this couple, their ancestors, or the Johnston descendants.
