FREDERIC SAMUEL HAYES
Frederic Samuel Hayes was the fifth great grandson of William Shackford (Caroline Jeness (7), Samuel (6), Samuel (5), Samuel (4), William (3), Samuel (2), William (1)). He was born on May 9, 1852, the son of Samuel Hayes and Caroline Jenness Shackford. In 1860 he was living in Conway, New Hampshire with his parents who were farmers with two siblings, Fannie Augusta Hayes and Caroline Shackford Hayes.
After his education in Boston in 1868, Fred returned to Conway and in 1870 was employed as a clerk at US Govt Dist. He remained in Conway and at age 28 he was married to Jane, age 33 and had a son Herbert Hayes, age 3. (I can't find any record of their marriage or her maiden name and no future records of Jane or Herbert. I presume she and their son died between 1880 and 1882 because he had another son named Herbert).
Samuel married Minnie E Bemis, the daughter of John and Abbie F (Heald) Bemis on Dec 31, 1882 in Conway, Carroll, New Hampshire and on February 20, 1884, Minnie gave birth to Herbert Enos Hayes. Three years later, in June 20, 1887 she gave birth to a daughter, Carolyn Abby Hayes. Frederic and Caroline continued to farm next door to his parent's farm. Sometime between 1905 and 1910 they moved to a new farm in Somerville, Massachusetts. The entire family is listed in the 1910 census in Somerville with Frederic S Hayes, age 57, listed as a farmer, on a general farm, Minnie age 47, Herbert E Hayes, age 26 with occupation electrician, general wiring, A. Caroline Hayes age 22 as a student, normal school (believe that is the name for a teaching college).
Frederick died at age 64 on July 31, 1916 in Conway, Carroll, New Hampshire. His wife Minnie lived until 1948 boarding with the Suow family in Conway in 1920, living with her daughter A. Carolyn in Conway in 1930. Both Minnie and her daughter may have been institutionalized at the New Hampshire State Hospital in 1940.
Children:
Herbert Hayes (1877 - ?)
Herbert Enos Hayes, (1884 - 1945) - farmer, electrician, married Helen M, no children
Caroline Abby Hayes, (1887 - aft 1940) - teacher in public school, 1920, did not marry, may have been institutionalized at the New Hampshire State Hospital in 1940
I've added a trip to Conway, New Hampshire to my future genealogy research plans to see if I can find any additional information about Frederic Samuel Hayes and his parents as the Conway newspapers are not available on-line.
