MARY LINCOLN SHACKFORD FRENCH
Mary Lincoln Shackford was William and Mary Cutter (Lincoln) Shackford's third child born on March 24, 1841 in Eastport, Washington. We've written about her brothers: John William, a famous captain, Edward Wallace, another famous seaman who served as state senator, Eben Lincoln who served in the military and then became a merchant in Minnesota, and Charles Joseph who died at sea. While there were many articles in newspapers describing the lives of the men in this family, the only information we can find about Mary is a marriage record, census listings which we found by her husband's name and the death notice shown above. We are trying to learn more about her husband which is proving a bit difficult due to the common nature of the name French.
On August 22, 1864, Mary married Andrew Washington French, the son of John French, an Eastport merchant and Olive P Lamphrey. Sometime thereafter they moved to Chicago where Andrew worked as a clerk in a store and two sons, William Shackford and Ferdinand Lampher were born. Sometime before 1880 they resettled in Philadelphia where Andrew worked as a clerk and Mary's sister, Sarah was living with them working as a housekeeper, and the two boys were now 15 and 10. During this year, Andrew's mother died leaving a third of the family estate to him and his two brothers. The family remained in Philadelphia where Andrew worked as a clerk at a Railroad. Mary died on August 25, 1913 followed by Andrew's death due to nephritis on March 22, 1918. They are both buried at the Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
