SAMUEL SHACKFORD (1842-1909)
Samuel Shackford was born in Massachusetts December 1842[i] to John Shackford and Mary Glover. As mentioned in a 7/9/2013 blog, Samuel's father John and his two brothers Samuel Q. and Luther C. headed to California in 1849 when Samuel was five and at some later date, Mary and her three children, Georgianna, Samuel, and George F. traveled from Massachusetts to California.
Samuel enlisted in the 1st Regiment, California Calvary Company F on August 11, 1863 at the age of 20[ii] and was mustered in the service on August 15, 1863. The book Records of California Men in the War of the Rebellion, 1861 to 1867 documents that Company F spent time in California, Tucson, Camp Miembries, New Mexico, San Elizario, Texas, Kansas, and New Mexico. We don't have any source information showing that Samuel was at all these locations (he may have been assigned to other duties, another unit, or ill during one of these deployments), there is documentation showing that he was at Camp Yuma on June 7, 1864 temporarily attached to Co A, 7th Infantry.[iii] We also know that he mustered out of the service on July 21, 1866[iv].
After the war, Samuel filed for[v] and was issued a land patent which included 80 acres of land in the San Joaquin area[vi]. He married Sylvia Emma Anthony on Dec 9, 1867[vii], worked as a farmer, raised a family, and registered to vote[viii]. He received a for his civil war service of $12/month as of Jan 17, 1908 and died on 13 September 1909 at the age of 66[ix]. After his death, his widow Emma did receive his pension effective Oct 18, 1909.

I still would love to learn more about Samuel's trip from Massachusetts to California, at what age did he travel and what was that trip like for someone so young (he was between 5-18 yrs old). Also what were his years like in the civil war in California?
