We can comfortably match nine of the twelve individuals to a specific Shackford who descended from the immigrant William Shackford who arrived in Bloody Point about 1661 or to someone who married into that family. Are any of these your SHACKFORD ancestors?
The twelve Shackfords who were in the following states in 1790: New Hampshire: 6, Maine: 4; Massachusetts: 2 are listed below: Note: we know Maine was not formed until 1820 but the documents pertaining to the 1790 census break it out as a separate state). We're working on mapping these locations for the 1790 and future censuses as it will be helpful to see the locations visually.
This is our first review of the 1790 census. We hope that over time we find more information that helps us solidify these matches and over time plan to try to match the other census documents to William's descendants.

We have a few Shackfords who may have been heads of households during the 1790 census and have listed the possible reasons why they are not listed in the census.
Josiah Shackford (1747-1829) - of Portsmouth, Rockingham, New Hampshire - was shipmaster and most likely did not keep a separate home. His wife, Deborah Marshall Shackford was most likely living with her mother during this census period.
Josiah Shackford (1767-1843) - Josiah was born in Newington, New Hampshire and died in Barnstead, New Hampshire. He had not yet married so may have been living at home with his father Samuel.
Nathaniel Cooper Shackford (1769-1852). Nathaniel was born in Newington, Rockingham, New Hampshire and had not yet married so may have been in the home of his father Samuel. He is listed in the 1800 census.
Samuel Shackford (1761-1844) - would have been in Wells, York, Maine or Sanford, York, Maine - we are uncertain who his parents were and are unsure why he wasn't in the census as he was married before 1790 and had served in the Revolutionary War. We do find Samuel in Sanford in the 1820 census.
William Shackford (1753-abt 1832) - son of Samuel Shackford of Newburyport listed above. He may have been a mariner who did not have a home during the census. He didn't have a family as he didn't marry until after this census was taken.
William Shackford (1764-1841) - William was 26 at the time of the census and may have been living at the home of John Shackford, his father.
