We also discovered that Capt John L Shackford received certificate 1496 from the American Shipmaster's Association, and organization which was formed in 1861 to "elevate the moral character and professional capacity of seamen; by the encouragement of worthy and well-qualified officers, and to promote the security of life and property at sea." They issued certificates to worthy, competent persons who served in the mercantile marine services.
