Lila had lost her father when she was 17 and a brother Henry (who had fallen under a runaway wagon) when she was 20. She was living in Tulare in 1910 but by 1912 was living with her mother and brother at 1016 N Harrison in Stockton where she worked as a stenographer.
Her tragic death was reported in the March 2, 1914 edition of the Oakland Tribune which stated that she and two friends were returning from Oakland to Stockton in a car that broke down. One friend borrowed a car which was used to tow the disabled car in which Lila and the second friend rode. Unfortunately the tow rope broke causing the car where Lila sat to roll into a ditch crushing Lila. She was transported to the County Hospital but died of her injuries.
Her older brother Frank Anthony Shackford was the informant on the death certificate who most likely coordinated her burial in the Stockton Rural Cemetery on March 4, 1914.
