When she was 16, Isabel was living in Bedford, Virginia with her father who was working as a preacher and her brother Theodore who was working as a bookkeeper. By the age of 19, Isabel was attending Randolph-Macon Women's College in the class of 1905 where she went by the name Lille Bell, was one of the charter members of the Alpha Xi Chapter of the Delta, Delta, Delta sorority and received Philosophy Honors.
In 1907 The Times Dispatch published this wonderful description of her wedding to Gustavus Walker Dyer. The newspaper mentions that her father performed the ceremony. Unfortunately he died two years later.
Lynchburg Social. ...
A large assembly was present Thursday night at 9:30 o'clock at the Rivermont Avenue Methodist Church to witness the brilliant marriage of Miss Isabel Temple Shackford, the talented daughter of Rev. The ceremony was performed by the bride's father, a former pastor of the church, her husband having been a former pastor of the same church.
Miss Mary K. Shackford, a sister of the bride, was the maid of honor, and Mrs. John Walter Shackford matron of honor. Mr Summerfield B Lambeth of Bedford City, was the best man.
The other attendants were Miss Mary Cheatwood of this city, and Mr William A Lambeth, of Greensboro, N. C., Miss Joe Mellwaine of Petersburg, and Mr Theodore Shackford, of this city.
Gustavus and Isabel settled in Nashville, Tennessee where he worked as a Sociology and Economic Professor, adviser to the Southern States Industrial Council, and Archivist of the State of Tennessee. They raised six children. Gustavus died in 1948. Isabel lived until age 95.

I'd love to know more about Isabel's life. I wonder if she ever read her father's wonderful diary which describes his spiritual life in Virginia after the Civil War and his love for his wife Cora (Isabel's mother).
