We don't know how long the marriage lasted. We don't find either Sarah or Theodore in the 1860 census but are certain they they were living apart by 1865 - Sarah J Shackford was living with her sister Mary Daniels, Mary's husband Leonard, and her mother Betsey A Hooper and Theodore was living with his brother Leonard. By 1870 Sarah was still living with her family but had changed her name to Sarah J Hooper and Bailey is living in a separate household with the occupation of candy pedler. Mary's husband Leonard had died by 1880 but Sarah was living with her sister, her sister's son and her mother and Bailey is listed with a wife Almira. Her sister's 1895 obituary mentioned "an only sister Mrs Sarah J. Hooper, who is deeply grieved at the loss of one with whom she has been closely associated throughout her life." Interestingly was listed as married in the 1900 census but in the 1910 census she had moved to Somerville where she was listed as a widow.
Sarah died in Somerville on Sept 12, 1912 and was buried in the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
