Thanks to Francis Henry Buffum, the author of A Memorial of The Great Rebellion; Being a History of the Fourteenth Regiment New-Hampshire Volunteers, Covering Its Three Years of Service, with Original Sketches of Army Life. 1862-1865, published in 1882, we have this photograph of Captain William Ellingwood Bunten.
From Buffum's book, we also learn that William was of Dunbarton, and a graduate of Dartmouth College and from birth records, we discover that William was born December 21, 1833 to John Bunten, a farmer and Abigail Dane Whipple. (His gravestone is engraved with a birth date of 1832 but sufficient other sources indicate he was most likely born in 1833.)
As mentioned in Wednesday's blog, Capt Wm E Bunten married Mary Ellen (Nellie) Shackford on Oct 12, 1862. We lean that William worked as a clerk for the Quartermaster's office in Washington DC and then built a career in the academic field, working as a school principal in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Wlatham, Massachusetts, Woodstock, Connecticut before settling in Kingston New York where William worked as the Principal of the Ulster Academy.
William died in Kingston on December 28, 1897. A picture of his gravestone at the Montepose Cemetery in Kingston, New York can be found at Find A Grave Memorial# 31615046.
William and Mary's Children for which we can find sourced information are listed below. The 1900 census mentions that Mary had three children and had three living but in addition to Walter and Mabel for whom we find marriage and death records, we find two other daughters - Ella and Alice, both mentioned in just one census. Ella is shown as a daughter in the 1880 census in Connecticut, age 9, in school but we do not find her again and we find Alice age 20, daughter in the 1900 census with a birth date of Nov 1879 and then find no other references for her. So at this time we'll list these four children hoping to find more information at a later date to correct any misinformation.
Walter Ellingwood Bunten (1866-1935) - married (1) Sarah Voight, (2) Martha A Tremper, worked in schools, as a clerk, an accountant, and as a traveling salesman. No children.
Mabel Eleanor Bunten (1869-1939) - married Rev Hirham Festus Lawler
Ella Bunten - (1871-????) - listed as age 9, in school in the 1880 census when family was in Connecticut, not found after that date
Alice Bunten (1879-????) - not listed in the 1880 census in Connecticut but listed as age 20 in the 1900 census with birth date of Nov 1879
If you know more about Capt Wm E Bunten, Mary Ellen Shackford or their family, we'd love to hear from you!
