Captain William Gardner Shackford, often known as W. G Shackford., was born in Bradford Massachusetts Sept 15 1840 to William Henry Shackford and Marie Parker Perry. His father, a professor at Phillips Exeter Adademy died of typhoid fever when William was just one year old and he grew up in Portsmouth under the guardianship of his grandfather William Moore Shackford who had been a sailor. William served in the military on the U. S. S. Maumee as an ensign and acting Master during the civil war. He then began captaining multiple ships including the Columbia off the west coast of the United States (still researching what other ships he may have captained) before working for Howard Gould as the Captain of the Niagara. William married Joanna Anna March in 1872 and they had six children: William Moore, Anna, Chauncey, Helen, Marion Perry, and Anna March. William died in 1907 two weeks after marrying his 2nd wife Ann Langdon Treadmill.
