Prominent Auburn Man Married
Saturday Evening to Orono Girl
The wedding of Dana Luther Shackford of Auburn and Miss Elsie Viola Wentzel of Orono took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Nevens, College street, on Saturday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Rev. A. W. Kelley, pastor of the First Universalist church of Lewiston officiated, using the single ring service.
Lester Shackford, brother of the bridegroom was best man, while the maid of honor was Miss Beryl Nevens. Pins and evergreen were used in decoration and the ceremony was performed in the bay window, which was especially attractive with evergreen.
The bride wore reindeer crepe back satin and carried Opelia roses. Mevens' dress was of brown panno and her flowers were also Ophelia roses. The bride's traveling cost was of brown with hat of gold candy cloth.
Following the ceremony refreshments were served with Miss Nevens and Miss Ruth Jordan serving. The other guests were the bridegroom's mother and sister and family, Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Hubbard and four children of Auburn.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Wentzel of Orono. She was born in Livermore Falls where she resided until past grammar school age. She was graduated from Orono high school and attended Bates College. She has been with the New England Telephone exchange for some time.
The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Josephine E. Shackford of Auburn. He was born in Poland, coming from one of the prominent families of South Poland and was graduated from Kent's Hill. He is an assistant master mechanic at Cushman-Hollis Co. He is a Shriner and a member of the Arab Patrol.
Upon return from their wedding trip Mr. and Mrs. Shackford will reside at 52 Summer street, Auburn.
From this announcement, birth, and census records, we learn that Dana Luther's mother was Josephine Cobb and his father who had died before his marriage was Flavius B Shackford, a farmer in Poland, Maine. We also learn that Dana was the third child following a sister Marie Ermine and a brother Lester Bordon. We also learn that Dana registered for World War I draft on September 12, 1918, worked as the assistant superintendent and then foreman at a shoe factory, and died in Lewiston on Sept 16, 1971. He is buried in Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn, Maine.
