SERGT
SAML SHACKFORD
CO F
1 CAL CAV
Samuel's biography which was shared in a blog on 9/30/2013 can be found here. He served in a California unit in the civil war from 1863 - to 1866 probably traveling to New Mexico, Texas, and even Kansas.
While researching other Shackford veterans, I've found newspaper articles describing veteran's gatherings, dinners, or other military related events they attended recognizing their service. I wonder if Samuel spent time with any of the members of his fellow veterans from Company F or from the 1st California Calvary after the civil war was over.
I wish to thank R. Boulware for giving me permission to share his photograph of Samuel's gravestone on this blog about Shackford family history. His gravestone is unique looking and reminds us of those who served in the civil war.
