Based on Levi's death record and a newspaper article placing his death on Nov 25, 1833 at age 67, we can place Levis birth around 1766.
In "Captain John Shackford and Family" , Samuel Shackford states that Levi was wounded at the Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17, 1775). Levi would have been eight or just barely nine years old at the time. However Samuel was Levi's grand nephew and was a thorough researcher so we don't want to deny that this event occurred but we do hope to someday find Samuel's research to see if he had any notes or documented sources regarding this statement.
On August 30, 1787, in Newbury, Massachusetts, Levi married Tamison Greenleaf, the daughter of Thomas Greenleaf and Susanna Brown. Levi is found in the 1790, 1800, 1820, and 1830 censuses of Newbury, then Newburyport which lets us know that he settled in Newburyport. We also Levi and Tamison listed as parents of five children in either their birth or christening records:
William Shackford (1889-1831) - married Tampson Greenleaf (my ancestor)
Susannah Brown Shackford (b. 1790)
Thomas Greenleaf Shackford (b. 1793, d. June 1825) - married Elizabeth Ganzlar
Joseph Greenleaf Shackford (b. 1798, d. March 1863) - married Elizabeth Wells
Susanna Shackford (b. 1801)
Over the next few blogs, we'll review land records which mention Levi which hopefully will let us know more about Levi.
