SAMUEL BURNHAM SHACKFORD (1871 - 1934)
Samuel B Shackford7 (Charles Burnham6, Samuel Burnham5, Samuel4, Samuel3, Samuel2, William1)was born November 11 1871 in Conway, New Hampshire[i] to Charles Burnham Shackford and Caroline Cartland Shackford. Education must have been important to this family as Samuel and his brother Moses Austin went to Harvard while their sister, Martha Hale Shackford attended Wellesley. Samuel graduated from Harvard's Law school in 1900 and practiced in Boston focusing on probate law before moving to Dover, New Hampshire. He became a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in 1906 and participated in the Committee on Collection of Records[ii]. He frequently published genealogy questions in newspapers asking about Shackford genealogical research[iii] published books on genealogical history,[iv] and was an avid collector of genealogy material[v]. Samuel also served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives for at least two terms[vi]. Samuel died in Boston of cardiac disease on February 21, 1934 and was buried in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, New Hampshire[vii]. After his death, his estate donated 3,000 books to the New England Historical Genealogical Society and many deeds, letters and other historical documents to the New Hampshire Society of Concord.[viii] Those of us doing genealogy today are thankful of the work accomplished by Samuel. Some of his research questions and research can be found in digitized newspapers and we dream of days when we can travel to the libraries which house his large donated collections of genealogy research and reference materials.
