Harriet C Bibber Shackford
Harriet C Bibber was born Aug 5, 1813[1] in Eastport, Maine. She was the daughter of Thomas Bibber and Dorcas Pettengill, a seafaring family so it was probably not a surprise when she married Benjamin Batson Shackford on May 8, 1833[2] as he came from a background of sea captains.
Harriet gave birth to eight children who she raised while her husband learned how to captain a ship and began traveling to distant parts of the world. It must have been difficult to send him off on trips and very exciting when he returned safely as he possibly brought trinkets and shared stories of his travels to Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Trinidad and other distant locations with his family. Harriet lost at least two children at young ages, and two in their 20s. Their father's sense of adventure was shared with the family as two of her children moved west and settled in Oregon. Harriet died in Lubec, Maine in 1895 at the age of 82[3].
