This US Veteran's Administration Payment Card shows that Frances S Shackford, widow of William, Private with Company H, 4th received a pension of $12/month as of July 13, 1887. The card lets us know that Frances died Oct 8, 1914 and that the pension commission was notified in December 1914. The pension check dated Dec 4, 1914 was cancelled.

William returned to Lawrence and returned to a job at the mill in 1865, By 1870 he was working as a clerk in a clothing store and was living with his wife Frances, his 7 year old daughter Vista, and his in-laws. He filed for a pension as an invalid in 1879.
After William's death, Frances applied for and received a widow pension
