Henry was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on Feb 17, 1855 and is found in the Lowell census with his parents, grandmother, Clarissa G Rollins, and aunt Clarissa A Rollins. In 1860 he was living in Lowell where his father was working as a machinist. By then there were two other children in the family, Charles W, and Ida L and his grandmother Clarissa G Rollins was still living with the family. In 1870 the family was living in Concord New Hampshire where his father was working as a life insurance agent. The family had grown to seven children: Henry, Charles W, Alice, Fred, Albert (Burt), Ida May (May), and Frank. We believe that in 1870 Henry who was now 15 attended the Penacook Academy in Fisherville.
Henry moved out of the home in 1876 and was working as a clerk boarding at P. Glennon's on Thorndike in Concord. A year later he married Ida Louella Leighton the daughter of James G Leighton and Nellie Amelia Hill. In 1880 we find Henry listed both boarding with his mother, Mrs Mary Shackford in Concord at Valley and also living in Nashua where he was working as a blacksmith and living with his new wife and his brother Charles W Shackford who was also married.
In the following years, Henry lived in Nashua and Lowell, working in many different occupations - butcher, clerk, teamster, and mason. He died at the age of 29 in Boxborough, Massachusetts on November 21, 1884 of typhoid fever and was buried in the Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord, New Hampshire. In 1886 his wife Ida Leighton married John F Tibeau of Concord.
