In his book Newington, New Hampshire Families in the Eighteenth Century, Henry Hardon states that Samuel, born about 1674, married first Abigail Richards the daughter of William and Mary (Batchelder). We haven't found any additional information regarding this marriage but believe he is accurate as we've reviewed the summary of Abigail's mother's [Mary Richards] probate records which mention that administration of her estate was granted to her son Samuel Richards and his brother-in-law Samuel Shackford of Portsmouth on Feb 10, 1702/1703.
In Samuel's will, he gives and bequeaths unto "my beloved Wife Frances twenty Eight pounds p annum Dureing her life and in lieu of her thirds of My Estate: to be paid by my son William: in any thing that my wife may want for housekeeping." He also leaves his wife "or her order the sume of fifty pounds money as he can produce the same out of the Income of My Estate: or sooner if he See fit" and leaves her "the Eastern End of My Dwelling house in Portsmouth that part where I now livth Durering her Widowhood."
We see from the 1869 New England Historical & Genealogical Register and Antiquarian Journal that Samuel married Frances on May 10, 1716.
