Married...in Guilford, 14th inst., by N. P. Chapin, Esq., Mr Edwin Lanfair of Deerfield, to Miss Sabrina Shackford of Greenfield, Mass (Vermont phoenix., (Brattleboro, Vt), December 22, 1843, Image 3
Sabrina Shackford (1826[1]-1924[2]), was the youngest daughter of Samuel Shackford (1789-1831) and Susanna Hobbs (abt 1775 - 1878).
I wonder why Sabrina and Edwin were married 21 miles up the road in Vermont instead of in Greenfield or Deerfield where they lived? Did they have a wedding ceremony?
Sabrina was quite young (17) when she was married in 1843. Her new husband, Edwin was around 32 (calculated from the 1850 census). I wonder how they met.
The newly married couple settled first in Greenfield[3], then moved to Deerfield, Massachusetts[4]. While the census lists him as a farmer until he died in 1895[5], this was probably a career involving hard work for the whole family. For some reason, Sabrina started referring herself as Susanna Lanfair or Susanna S Lanfair in the 1870, 1880, 1900 and 1910 censuses.[6] .
Sometime after Edwin's death, Sabrina moved in with her daughter Lydia who lived in Hardwick, Massachusetts where she lived with her husband George M Patrill[7][8][9]. Sabrina died at the age of 97 in Hartwick. She was buried with her husband in Deerfield[10]
Children:
Edwin Cornealius Lanfair (1845-1845) - died 10 months later of dysentery[11].
Lewis Lanfair (1847-1847) - died of ulceration of kidneys[12].
Lydia M Lanfair (1849-????) - married George Patrill[13].
Clarence W Lanfair (1850-1934) married Lucy M Lanfair[14]
Orphie Ladonna Lanfair (1852-1949) married Chester Ebenezer Graves[15]
Frederick Eugene Lanfair (1855-????) - farmer, married Alzina F Baker[16]
While writing this article, I started to wonder what it was like to be a farmer's wife in Western Massachusetts in the 1870s. I've added a trip to Deerfield, Massachusetts to my future travel plans so that I can look for more documents about this family. During that visit, I hope to visit Historic Deerfield's museums and collections.
If you are a descendent of Sabrina Shackford and Edwin Lanfair, I'd love to hear from you so I can learn more about her.
