Charles Joseph Shackford was the youngest son of William and Mary Cutter (Lincoln) Shackford. His father William retired as a sea captain in 1833 at the age of 50 and started a family with his second wife, Mary Cutter Lincoln. His children most likely heard many stories about his adventures at sea.
Charles' birth record can also be found in the Maine, Births and Christenings, 1739-1900," index and he is found on June 18, 1860 at age six in is father's home in the 1860 census, but we have not yet found any other documents that mention what ship he was aboard when he died at sea or when in 1870 he died. We do know from this same source that his father, William died in March of that same year. We'll keep looking for old newspaper articles that may mention more about Charles' death.
