1) Which Shackford was the Captain of the Moneka and
2) Why was there such a long a gap between Benjamin B. Shackford's appointment as administrator of his father John Shackford's estate (Sept 1866) and Benjamin's posting of bond and efforts to move forward with the probate process (Sept 1869).
PEOPLE'S MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY.
THE STEAMSHIP MONEKA, CAP-
TAIN B. B. SHACKFORD, will leave North
Atlantic Wharf, Thursday, 26th of De-
cember, 1867, at 8 o'clock A.M
JOHN & THEO. GETTY, Agents,
December 24 North Atlantic Wharf
While there may be an earlier or later reference to a Shackford as captain of the Moneka, the first reference we find to a Shackford captain to the Moneka is a departure from New York on Oct 11, 1867 followed by an advertisement for the People's Steamship Company, mentioning a Capt P. Shackford. However because there were no SHACKFORD captains whose name started with P at in the 1860s and the ad was followed in December with the one shown above, we are very confident that this was an error which was corrected in this December advertisement. The last reference to Capt Shackford of the Moneka we find is April 15, 1868.
