"Help, Lord, for the godly man ceaseth"
DIED,
In Auburn, N. Y. on the 17th ult. Mr Albert S. Shackford, Merchant of this place, in the 28th year of his age. Mr S. had resided here about three years, - His consistent Christian course during that time secured for him the respect and confidence of all. At the organization of the Congregational Church in this town, he was elected Deacon and all the members of the Church will bear testimony to his faithfulness as a church officer. As Superintendent of the Sabbath School, he was very much interested in promoting the welfare of the children and youth. As a companion, citizen and friend, he was greatly beloved by all who knew him. He had greatly endeared himself to the former Pastor of the Church, Rev. H Hutchinson, who died in March last, and since the Rev Wm Salter took the Pastoral charge of the church, a similar relationship existed between them also.
In the death of Deacon Shackford the church has met with a loss that cannot be easily repaired. The Sabbath School has lost a worthy and efficient instructor, and the community has lost a good and most exemplary citizen. May all those, who were admonished by him, either through his word or his consistent conduct, strive to follow him as he followed Christ. May they be as well prepared to meet the retributions of eternity as was brother Shackford, and as the little church gather at the Prayer Meeting from week to week, and behold his place forever vacant there, and behold his place forever vacant there, and think of his exhortations and prayers, may they strive to be as circumspect, as consistent, as pious as he was. May this repeated visitation of God's Providence lead them to see and feel that this world is not their home. May it influence them to live for eternity and not for time, and to fill up in their own lives and example the vacancy that has thus been so unexpectedly left by the death of Deacon Shackford.
Mr S. was on his way to the east for a stock of goods. He was attacked with fever while spending the Sabbath at the house of Mrs Leonard, the mother of Mr B Leonard of this place, in Auburn N. Y. He arrived on the 15th, and although the most unremitting attention was shown him, both by physicians and the kind family of Mrs L., he died on the 17th. His was the death of a Christian--may our end be like his.
